Step-by-step Instructions

Learn how to work the 2/2 Left Purl Cross in 7 clear steps—without using a cable needle. Each step is supported by detailed photos to help you follow along easily.

This technique involves dropping stitches off the needle and rearranging them before working two purls and two knits, creating a left-leaning cross.

Step 1

Insert the right-hand needle purlwise into the four stitches on the left-hand needle, and slip them onto the right-hand needle.

Step 2

Insert the left-hand needle into the front of the third and fourth stitches on the right-hand needle from left to right.

Step 3

Drop the four stitches off the right-hand needle.

Step 4

Insert the right-hand needle purlwise back into the two loose stitches to pick them up.

Step 5

Insert the left-hand needle into the two stitches on the right-hand needle from left to right and slip them back onto the left-hand needle.

Step 6

With the yarn in front. Insert the right-hand needle purlwise into the first stitch on the left-hand needle, wrap the yarn counterclockwise around the right-hand needle, and pull it through to create a new stitch. Slip the old stitch off the left-hand needle. Repeat the same process for the next stitch.

Step 7

With the yarn in back. Insert the right-hand needle knitwise into the first stitch on the left-hand needle, wrap the yarn counterclockwise around the right-hand needle, and pull it through to create a new stitch. Slip the old stitch off the left-hand needle. Repeat the same process for the next stitch.
