Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1:

Hold the yarn in back, insert the right-hand needle knitwise into the first two stitches on the left-hand needle.

Step 2:

Wrap the yarn counter clockwise around the right-hand needle.

Step 3:

Pull a new stitch through two stitches.

Step 4:

Drop these stitches off the left-hand needle.

Step 5:

Insert the left-hand needle into the front of the first stitch on the right-hand needle from left to right, then slip it back to the left-hand needle.

K2SP produces the same result as K3tog. However, its steps are much more complicated and tedious, so it’s not recommended for double decreases where all stitches need to slant to the right in a consistent way.

That said, understanding the K2SP process can be very helpful when you need to decrease more stitches — such as k5tog, k6tog, or k7tog — where working multiple stitches together in a single step becomes significantly more difficult.
