Step-by-step Instructions

How to work the 1-to-3 increase with a yarn over between two purl stitches: this double increase is commonly known as PYOP (p1, yo, p1) in one stitch. It adds two stitches and creates a small eyelet in the center.

Step 1

With the yarn in front, insert the right-hand needle purlwise into the first stitch on the left-hand needle.

Step 2

Wrap the yarn counterclockwise around the right-hand needle.

Step 3

Pull the loop through the existing stitch.

Step 4

Keep the existing stitch on the left-hand needle. Wrap the yarn counterclockwise around the right-hand needle to create a yarn over.

Step 5

With the yarn in front, reinsert the right-hand needle purlwise into the same stitch.

Steps 6 and 7

Wrap the yarn counterclockwise again and pull a second loop through — just as you did in steps 2 and 3.

Step 8

Slip the worked stitch off the left-hand needle.

Result

You now have three stitches on the right-hand needle, derived from one stitch.
